Sunday, October 11th, 2009 the town of Balconevisi, nearby San Miniato - in the Pisa Province - will host the Duck Festival (Palio del Papero) an annual medieval festival with races where the competitors are ducks.
This unusual Palio has taken place annually since 1982 and involves the four "contrde" (districts) of Il Borgo, Fondo di Scesa, Buecchio and Fornacino in an animated race. The quacking contestants waddle past each other as great a speed as they can, cheered on by enthusiastic locals.
Before the race there is also an historical parade and food stalls serving up local specialities.
