The Church of San Vito has been rebuilt in the same spot as the old building destroyed by bombing, which in turn had replaced an older and larger church demolished in the late 18th century during work carried out on the river embankments.
The present church stands on the spot where, according to tradition, Pisa's Patron Saint St. Ranieri died on 17 June 1161. Inside the church there is a 14th-century tombstone of a member of the Scacceri family, to which the saint belonged.
