Inaugurated in July 1966, this botanical garden is dedicated to the passionate botanist Pietro Pellegrini.
The area, whixh spreads over approximately three hectares, is covered in many endemic species typical of limestone areas, and various examples of flora typical of silica mountains areas.
The garden also contains a plant laboratory-hostel, for researchers involved in the study of Apuan flora.
Recently, a small lake was created with a number of plant species found in the rare wetland areas of the Apuan Alps.
The Orto Botanico, which is the property of the City of Massa, is run by a technical and administrative committee of local bodies and the University of Tuscany.
