Piazza Aranci was laid out after the much opposed demolition of the Church of San Pietro in 1807, and subsequently embellished by the double row of orange trees that still line it on three sides.
One of the unquestioned merits of the piazza is the way it draws attention to the enormous Palazzo Ducale, with which it forms a single monumental complex.
Piazza Aranci is today as much a symbol of the centre of the city as it has ever been.
