Piazza del Popolo was made half way througth the 19th century, as the result of the levelling of the orto di Badia, a large piece of land attached to the Badia monastery, and was, for a long time, used for the market of cereal crops. The building on the north side, which was modified a few decades ago and now houses municipal offices, is what remains of the traditional Loggia del Grano. On the opposite side there is a stele in honour of the Fallen of Risorgimento (those who died for the unification of Italy) designed by Giuseppe Aretini (1880).
The south side is closed off by the Palazzo delle Poste, whose construction, at the beginning of this century, considerably reduced the original surface area of the square.
