Piazza San Francesco is situated at the crossroads of via Guido Monaco and the old Valle Lunga street (now called via Cavour), which is an obligatory access point to the oldest part of town - if only because of the presence of the church of S.Francesco and its precious frescoes. The current appearance of the square is largely the result of its being enlarged in around 1870, when via Guido Monaco was opened and a wing of the Franciscan convent was knocked down. Recent restoration work has brougth the area in front of the church back to its original level and has brought interesting archeological finds to light.
Palazzo lambardi, the former seat of the Accademia dei Costanti is situated on the opposite side of the square, and there is a monument to Vittorio Fossombroni, by Pasquale Romanelli (1864) at the east end.
