Florentine Gatehouse and ramparts. The 12th century gatehouse is the most attractive entrance to the old town. You can still see part of the old walls and their battlements with loopholes and the fort.
Just before the Porta Fiorentina on your left, take Via San Francesco (San Francesco Road), signposted Montefoscoli, and walk to the fonte dei Fonchioni (Fonchioni fountain). This provided water for the villagers of Palaia when there was no direct water supply to people’s houses. You can still see running water even today.
On the right, before arriving at the fountain, there is the chiesa di San Francesco (St. Francis’s church).
Walk through the gatehouse into the square.
