Civic Tower and Clock Tower.

The civic tower and clock tower, known in 1500 as the Arco del Podestà (Podestà Arch), probably because the Comune leader had his living quarters nearby, has Ghibelline battlements. It was transformed into a clock tower after 1655.

Go through the gatehouse and carry on to the Peggio Palaia Pub. You will notice that the road is not built on solid ground but is supported by arches on either side; it  was the site of the castle’s drawbridge. It was the main entrance into the citadel up until the end of the 11th century. Panoramic viewpoint.

Carry on along via del Popolo and take the first road on the right, via della Rocca which leads up to the fortress.
