The fortress
This is the highest point in the town. It was probably the site of the Monsmagnifridum Castle mentioned in a document in 936. The lane winds up to the fortress in a spiral and you can still see that the houses which line the road were towers because of their tower-shape.
The fortress hosted the citadel with its tower and battlements. It was last restored and partly rebuilt in 1509 by the Florentines. It reached up to four levels and there was a clock on the top. Nowadays there is nothing left of the old fortress, only few ruins, but you can still enjoy a magnificent view from the small plateau on the top of the mound.
Panoramic viewpoint.
