The Castle of Gargonza is located 6 km from Monte San Savino. It is a medieval village surrounded by luxuriant woods.
Due to the last restoration, the village is now made up of houses, each one affording the visitor the opportunity for resting, studying or group activity in quiet surroundings. Dante Alighieri is said to have been in Gargonza when the Ghibellines of Arezzo met their counterparts from Florence in this castle in 1304.
Don’t miss the central square with its stately crenelated tower of the Cassero, the Romanesque church of Santi Tiburzio e Susanna (on the façade, a lunette with The Madonna with the Child and two Angels): inside the church, a fresco dating 1483 of Aretina school and a retablo of Orazio Porta (1585 ca.).
