The Museum of Sinopie is located in the Piazza del Duomo, in a specially restored wing of the Santa Chiara Hospital, built by Giovanni di Simone in 1257.
A sinopia is an outline, a preparatory sketch of a future fresco drawn either by the master himself or by a particularly gifted pupil of the master's workshop. The drawing, traced with reddish or dark ochre earth, is named after the town of Sinope, Turkey.
The preparatory sketches for the most significant frescoes are the Triumph of Death, the Final Judgment, the Stories of Anchorites, the Crucifixion by Francesco di Traino, the Theological Cosmography by Piero di Puccio and the Biblical Stories by Benozzo Gozzoli and his workshop.
