Around the middle of the 12th century the architect Diotisalvi erected this octagonal monument for the Order of the Hospital of St. John. In the last century it was remodelled by removing all the loggias.
The church has a double tier of windows, several entrances and a high-rise octagonal dome resting on a drum of the same shape. St. Ubaldesca Taccini, the patron saint of the Knights of Malta, operated here. Clearly visible on the adjoining brick bell tower is the signature of the church designer.
