
Church of high architectonic value, it was built in the second half of the 15th century by Giuliano da Sangallo, according the harmonious proportions of the Greek cross and is surmounted by a cupola.
The external cladding is in white and green marble but it was never terminated. The interior of the Basilica denotes the typical Renaissance style: it is enhanced by a glazed fired clay frieze and some "tondos" by Andrea della Robbia.
The four stained glass windows have been designed by Domenico Ghirlandaio and in here you can admire many works of art. The north wing is closed by an elegant 16th c. balustrade by Buontalenti with a magnificient aedicula in white marble which have been designed by Sangallo inspired on those in the Pantheon. Below the Vestry are the old prisons.
