The current construction of Casa del Petrarca (in Via dell'Orto, just beyond the Pozzo di Tofano (Tofano well), was built in the 16th century on the remains of a medieval building traditionally held to be Francesco Petrarca's birthplace (1304).
It was half destroyed in the last world war, has been rebuilt and now houses the Petrarca Academy of letter, Arts and Sciences (together with its library), which was founded in the 18th century associations of the Discordi, Oscuri and Forzati.
